RIP Dave Mason. A great song to test out a stock Fender Vintera III Early ’60s Jazz Bass. Setup out of the box was terrible as usual but after taking the neck off and tightening the truss rod a bit it plays like butter! Much better playability and quality than the 60s Jazz Flea Sig I had years ago. The sound is very similar to it though not surprisingly.
I typically favor the neck pickup with these stacked concentric volume and tone control reissues as they seem to offer a warmer/more P bass style sound than your typical volume, volume, modern tone setup. Couldn’t be happier with the quality, playability, and tone. Sonic blue, mint pickguard, with a matching headstock is just stunning in person! I can’t stop looking at it!
Maybe some flatwounds down the road but I don’t mind Fender rounds at all!
On a side note, I’m running a Grace M303 active direct box and an API compressor pedal into a Quantum HD8 interface. I’m also running Fender Studio 8 as my DAW and blending a Fender Bassman amp from their Rumble plugin suite with the direct sound for the final bass tone in the video.
