On The Beatles’ White Album, bass was primarily recorded by blending a Direct Input (DI) signal straight into Abbey Road’s valve-powered REDD.51 mixing console. with Paul’s Blonde Fender Bassman or Showman amp. Engineer Ken Scott captured a grittier sound using a Fender Jazz Bass, often double-tracking parts with a Fender Bass VI for an edgier tone. The Altec RS124 compressor was often used as well.
