During Elizabeth Reed, From the Evening with The Allman Brothers Album! In case you didn’t know, Allen Woody (1955–2000) was a bassist best known for his eight-year tenure with the Allman Brothers Band and as a co-founder of the jam band Gov’t Mule.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he began his career playing in local bands and working at the famous Gruhn Guitars. He joined the Artimus Pyle Band (formed by former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle) in the 1980s, which eventually led to his audition for the Allman Brothers Band in 1989. Woody played a major role in the Allman’s reformation and stayed with them until 1997.
In 1994, Woody and fellow Allman Brothers bandmate Warren Haynes co-founded the blues rock trio Gov’t Mule. He tragically passed away in 2000 at the age of just 44.
